Some Things I Would Hate Not To Know
Text: Hosea 4:6; Eph. 5:17
Introduction:
My mother used to say to me, "Son, what you don't know won't hurt you."
That may be so in a few things but not in the most important things in a person's
life. Some say I took my mother's advice and grew up not knowing the importance of
knowing some things. We will hurt more by not knowing than by knowing. I will
deal with some of them in this message. Remember there are some things a Christian
can say without reservation, "We know--we see--we shall."
1- Some things I care not to know.
2- Some things I realize I still need to know.
3- Some things I know that I know. I know I am saved eternally. I know whom I have
believed. I know I was not redeemed with corruptible things like silver and gold.
I know the blood of Jesus Christ has cleansed me from all sin's penalty. Many
other things we know as a believer in Christ. But, what we know is not my message.
It is the things many do not know that will be noted in this message. The
things I will mention are things I know and thank God for allowing me to know.
There are several places in the Bible where we find these words- "They knew
not." They certainly were not profited by not knowing.
You hear so much about young people completing high school or even college, and are so
unlearned in so many areas. They will never be able to go into the work force with
any success. How much worse it is to see a Child of God who has been saved a long
time and still knows very little about the things of great importance.
I want to cover seven thoughts found where someone, or a group of people, knew not
something very important. I would hate not to know these things.
I. THE WILL OF GOD FOR MY LIFE- Eph. 5:17"Wherefore be ye not
unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is."
A. Not knowing produces:
1. Doubt 2. Division 3. Discouragement
B. Some seem to know for everyone but themselves.
C. How to know God's will---- Look for three things:
1.A Desire in your heart that will not leave.
2. God leading you in a certain direction by His providence.
3. Third, not least, the Word of God speaking to your heart.
See James 1:5 and Phil. 2:12.
II. SAMPSON DID NOT KNOW THE POWER WAS GONE
See Judges 16:20
A. He was unconcious of spiritual decline in his life.
B. He goes against his parents teachings and wishes.
C. He takes on an unequal yoke.
D. He sinks to acts of immorality.
E. He is spiritually blinded now.
F. He is powerless to Delilah and temptations.
H. He loses sight, strength, became a shame. The enemy
mocked him and his God. He was, "Like any
other man."
III. ISRAEL KNEW NOT THE SCRIPTURES- (Matt. 22:29)
A. Basis of all error is not knowing the Scriptures.
1. We are to read for a fruitful mind.
2. We are to meditate on the Father's Word- (Josh.1:8).
3. We are to study to be thoroughly furnished- (1 Tim.3:7).
B. I would hate not to know what God said concerning the following:
1. Regeneration- Jn. 3:3
2. Repentance- Lk. 13:3; Acts 17:30
3. Righteousness- Rom.10:4
4. Retribution- Gal. 6:7
5. Return of the Lord- Jn.14:3; 1 Thess. 4:13-17
6. Reaping His fields- Jn.4:35
7. Rewards in heaven- 1 Cor. 9:17
IV. AS NOAH'S GENERATION KNEW NOT OF THE FLOOD UNTIL IT CAME. (Matt.24:37-39)
A. A Day of Ignorance- Could have, should have known.
Noah was a preacher of righteousness and should have
known.
B. A Day of Indulgence and Immorality- Gen.4-5
The same days will come again (Luke 17:26-28).
C. A Day of Indecision- No one came to the ark to be saved.
Matt. 24:39-"And took them all away." Ignorance did not
save them then nor will it when He comes again.
V. THE VOICE OF MY SHEPHERD (Jn. 10:27)
"My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me." We hear, we
know, and we follow.
VI. THE DAY OF MY VISITATION OF GOD (Lk. 19:44)
A. So many have been convicted of sin, yet put it off.
B. Like Felix (Acts 24:25).
"And as he reasoned of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come, Felix
trembled and answerd, Go thy way for this time, when I have a convenient season, I will
call for thee."
VII. FINALLY, I WOULD HATE NOT TO KNOW GOD
(2 Thess.1:7-9)
"And to you who are troubled, rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed
from heaven with His mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengenance on them that know
not God and that obey not the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, Who shall be punished with
everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of His
power."
A. Pitiful words- "knew not God" "fiery vengeance"
B. Painful words some will hear- "Depart I never knew you."
