God Has Written A Poem
Introduction: There is great diversity in
poetry. Some makes absolutely no sense at all to me. Maybe it
is not so to others. For an illustration, the ones they lady read at
President Clinton's inaugural. Others you heard in the sixties when
young people sat around reciting words that had no continuity of
thought. There are others----mine also---what can I say? I
don't even know where to put the commas. The only thing I can say for mine
is that they rhyme. Laying aside the efforts of man and his poetry
altogether, I want to look at the marvel of God's poetry. First,
there are so many things we are likened to in the Bible as believers.
1. Sons- because of divine birth
2. Soldiers- because of our divine warfare
3. Sheep- because of our depraved nature in flesh
4. Servants- because of our divine obligations
5-Stewards- because of our divine trust from the Father
6. Saints- because of our divine position in Christ
7. Strangers- because of our divine destination.
Also we are:
1. Priest and Kings
2. Pilgrims
3. Palm Trees
4. Plants in a Garden, etc.
But here we are called a Poem.
Ephesians 2:10:
"For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works,
which God hath before ordained that we should walk in
them."
Our English word "workmanship" comes from the
Greek word "poiema" which means--"that which has been
made." We get our word "poem" from it.
Also, the word poet comes from the word. In other words, we are as
Christians, a poem written by the greatest of poets, God Himself.
Now, lets see how a Christian resembles a poem.
I. A Poem Represents The Work Of Another Hand.
A. It never brought itself to the place of being.
Jesus did.
B. A Christian is the result of His Divine skill.
II. Every True Poem Has A Theme (both definite and
positive one).
A. Lives without Christ are theme-less.
B. Only Christ can give a theme to life.
John 3:35-36 says, " The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all
things into his hand. He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life:
and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God
abideth on him."
III. Every Good Poem Has Unity.
A. The Message is the same from beginning to the finish.
B. There are no detours--there is nothing irrelevant.
IV. Every Good Poem Is Marked With Progress.
Progress-Maturity--Growth (From Exodus on we seeing the
people of God progressing.
V. Every Good Poem Has A Balanced Rhythm.
A lack of balance distracts. So does an unbalanced
Christian testimony.
Certain things can cause us to have an unbalanced testimony---such as
conversation, habits, desires, etc. An unbalanced testimony takes
away the beauty of being a Christian to others.
VI. Every Good Poem Has Rhyme.
--Something revealing one thought to a higher, more
beautiful one.
Conclusion:
Man was originally God's workmanship made in creation---marred and
wrecked by sin. God sets His hand upon him in redemption in Christ
and declares for all to see and hear His "poema." Poetry
is a simple and beautiful way to express a truth.
