"Preach The Word"
Christ, The Beloved
(Matt. 3:17; 12:18; 17:5)
Intro: Do you have more than one name? Maybe, you are known by a nickname. There are hundreds of titles for Christ in the Bible. Here is a name that is used three times in the same book (Matthew) Too, it is so important, it is used by God, the Father in His reference to His Son.
*The word "beloved" means "divinely loved." Other synonyms are "esteemed, dear, favorite, worthy of love." Sometimes, it is rendered "well beloved" (3 times), and "dearly beloved" (9 times).
1. His Beloved Paths - Matt. 3:17
*He walked in the paths chosen by His Father.
A. Paths of humility - submitted to John's baptism v.13, 14
B. Paths of holiness - "to fulfil all righteousness" v.15
C. Paths of honor - Father & Spirit honored Him - v.16, 17
*Christ is our example; let us walk in His steps; 1 Pet. 2:21
2. His Beloved Purpose - Matt. 12:18
*This prophecy was fulfilled in Christ.
A. He was the chosen One - "chosen"; Isa. 42: 1 - "mine elect"
B. He was the compassionate One - illus. reed & flax v.19, 20
C. He was the conquering One - "victory"; Gentiles v.20, 21
*Again, the Beloved Son is the pattern for Christian wltness.
3. His Beloved Person - Matt. 17:5
*This is a preview of kingdom glory; & a full view of His glory!
A. The perfection of His person - "transfigured" v.2; His deity
B. The preeminence of His person - over all, not just 1 of 3.
C. The proclamation of His person - "Hear" v.5; also v.5 & 8
*Jesus walked in His Father's paths; obeyed His Father's will; revealed His Father's person!
Concl: In "The Parable Of The Vineyard" (Mk. 12:1 - 10), the owner of the vineyard sent his "wellbeloved" to represent him. Mthough he was slain while doing his father's will, he points us to God's love for His Son. May we love the One the Father loves!
