"Preach The Word"

Accepted In The Beloved

(Eph. 1:6; 2 Sam. 9:1-13)

Intro: When my wife and I were married, my parents accepted her on the basis of my sonship. Similarly, when we were joined to Christ in saving faith, we were accepted with God in His Son.

*Since David means "beloved," His kindness to Mephibosheth (who portrays the disabled, disfigured, dissaproved sinner) wonderfully illustrates our being "accepted in the Beloved" (Eph. 1:6).

1. Accepted In The Beloved's Thoughts - 2 Sam. 9:1-3

A. In his consideration - David thought of him first! v.1, 3 B. In his covenant - for another's sake - v.1, 7 *Other kings asked, "Who can I fight?", David: "Who can I be kind to"? J.R

2. Accepted With The Beloved's Tenderness - 2 Sam. 9:4, 5

A. The tenderness of his plan - he included, not excluded 9:4

B. The tenderness of his pursuit - "sent" & "fetched" 9:5

*lllus. Mephibosheth must have been afraid, but.. Apply

3. Accepted Before The Beloved's Throne - 2 Sam. 9:6-8

A. The pitiful found mercy - v.6, 7 (not rejection; Saul) B. The poor found ministry - v.7, 8 (but kindness)Ex. Dogs

4. Accepted Throughout The Beloved's Territory - 2 Sam.9:9-

A. An inheritance restored - v.9; cf. heavenly places

B. An increase revealed - v.10; what he couldn't do; harvest

*Acceptance brought abundance; grace brought glory.

5. Accepted At The Beloved's Table - 2 Sam. 9:11-13

A. The postion at the table - "as kings son" v.7, 11, 13

B. The provisions at the table - "continually" v.13

*Illus. Imagine a king visiting David & seeing Meph. at table

Conl: My family & I watched a nature commentary in which a mother sheep was mourning over the loss of her lambkin. To get her to accept another little lamb, the farmer used the fleece of her own to cover it. God accepts us only in Christ!
