"Preach The Word"

David, A Type Of Christ, The Beloved

(1 Sam. 16:4-13)

Intro: A dear pastor friend related to several visitors in his home how his grandson was so much like his son. "His appearance, his personality, and his movements," he said, "are just like him."

*David is so much like Jesus: born in Bethlehem; 8th son, the son of new beginnings; of the tribe of Judah; root of Jesse (see Isa. 11:1); of lowly origin, but exalted; after God's own heart, etc.

B. The shepherd-protector - 1 Sam. 17:34-37; "bear" & "lion"

*psalm 23 gives us the David/Jesus perspective

3. The Beloved Savior Of The Family - 1 Sam. 17

B. Saved from the paralysis of the enemy - fear; 17:11, 52

aDavid points us to the greater David - See Heb. 2:14, 15

4. The Beloved Sovereign Of The Free - 1 Kgs. 2:11

A. The lordship of his kingdom - "king"; Christ=King of Kings!

B. The length of his kingdom - 40 years; Christ=forever

*David: not without his blemishes, conflicts; but Jesus perfect!

5. The Beloved Seer Of The Faithful - Ps. 22/23

A. His foretellings or prophecies - cf. Ps. 22

B. His forthtellings or psalms - ef. Ps. 23

*Like Christ, David was a prophet & a king.

Cond: Twin boys were closely observed to determine which would become king. One kept his fist clenched, but, the other kept his hand open, and was chosen as king. Later, he became known as ~e King With The Open Hands." This is our Beloved!
