There are various appointments in life which we do not
want to miss, but due to circumstances beyond our control, we may miss
certain engagements. I have missed many events that I would rather have
not missed, but was unable to be present. One appointment I do not mind
missing is one to have a tooth filled, that is, unless the pain is quite
severe. If that be the case, then the appointment is very welcome. Let’s
consider three appointments I believe the Lord would have us to consider
in this mini-sermon.
I. The Appointment Of Separation. Heb. 9:27 says,
"It is appointed unto men one to die." If Jesus does not come
soon, many of us will face physical death by the means of natural causes
or accidental causes. Death is the separation of the soul and spirit from
the body. When the believer is absent from the body, he is present with
the Lord. When a loss man dies, he goes to a terrible place called hell,
where he is banished from all that is good and holy. First, there is the surety
of it. Unless Jesus comes in the very near future, death may come to
you in a very unexpected manner. There is also the suddenness of it (see
Job.34:20). As well, there can be the step of it (1 Sam. 20:3).
Since those things are true and since death can come at any moment, it
pays for us to be prepared (Amos 4:12)
II. The Appointment To Inspection. The Bible also
says in Heb. 9:27, "But after this the judgment." We are told in
Romans 14:12 that "everyone of us" will give an account of
himself or herself to God. The lost will stand before God that their
degree of punishment in hell be determined, and the saved will stand
before the Lord to see the degree of their reward in heaven. First, the
Bema Seat judgment (2 Cor. 5:10).
The works of the believer will be tried by fire,
shortly after Jesus comes for His church (Rev.22:12). Some 1,007 years
later, there will be the
Great White Throne Judgment (Rev.20:11-15). All who
are there at the second judgment are cast into the Lake of Fire
(Rev.20:15).
III. The Appointment To Salvation. 1Thess. 5:9 says,
"God......hath appointed us to obtain salvation." First, there
is the "now" of salvation (2 Cor. 6:2). Secondly, there
is the "how" of salvation (Rom. 10:9,10,13). Finally,
there is the "wow" of salvation. The Bible says in 2 Cor.
5:17, "If any man be in Christ he is a new creature."
