Weigh Out Counsel Received

There are a lot of people out there who want to give you all kind of advice.  If you need counsel, you be wise to carefully consider who you trust to advise you as to what to do with your life.  The Bible says, "In the multitude of counsellors there is safety" (Prov.24:6).  At the same time, it is not only the quantity of counsellors you have but also the quality.  That same verse also speaks of wise counsel.  It is not just enough to get counsel, but it should be wise counsel.  Let me give you several things to consider as you seek counsel as you go though life.

I.  Seek Counsel From God First.

When you are trying to decide what to do about a situation,  go to God first and seek what the Bible has to say about the decision you have to make.   The Bible is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path (Ps.199:105).

II. Get Counsel From A Saved Person.

I am not saying secular people cannot give you good advice, but when you are dealing with moral issues and spiritual values, you had better lean toward talking to people who know Christ as their personal Savior.  They will counsel you from a Scriptural standpoint rather than a secular-humanist one.  You do not want someone to lead you astray.

III. Remember No One Who Advises You To Live Contrary To The Bible Is A True Friend.

Anyone who really cares about you like they should will want you to do the will of God in your life.  They will desire that you please the Lord Jesus Christ.

IV.  Remember Doing Wrong Can Cost Your Dearly.

God forgives all sin, but you still have to face consequences of sin.   Some young folks have contracted deadly diseases or some annoying disease they will carry with them for the rest of their lives, because they allowed someone to lead them the wrong way.  Sin will make you have to pay more than you want to pay.

IV.  Seek The Advice Of Your Parents.

They have been through much more than you and may very well be able to help you to cope with some situation you in in right now.  Your parents love you very much.  Because they do, they want to see the best things in life come your way----they should want to see you honor the Lord with your life.  Always respect your parents because it will bring God's blessing (Ex.20:12).

V.  Don't Just Do Something Because Someone Tells You To Do It, You Pray About It And See If That Is What The Lord Wants You To Do.

The Bible promises that God will give you guidance if you are seeking His will.  In Ps.32:8 the Lord says, "I will guide thee with mine eye."   "Eye" speaks of intelligence.  He knows the way for you if you will follow Him.
